For many years, Cooper has written and arranged music for use in worship -- hymn introductions for the organ, calls to worship, Compline settings, and instrumental accompaniments. In 2013, however, he and his wife, Sarah, decided to begin writing hymns together in an effort to add to the range of musical options that speak to the realities, complexities, and challenges for many modern-day Christians.
To begin this new endeavor, Sarah sought to write a song text each week that was based on the lectionary readings and the sermons given by their pastors, Jan Ruud and Rebecca Shjerven. Cooper, in turn, selected the ones that caught his imagination and worked to write a fitting melody within a musical style he felt matched the content of the words.
Since that initial year, they have continued to write together and have shared these results with their congregation, had many conversations with others about the songs’ meaning and functionality, and made many revisions over time to enhance their effectiveness for use in worship.
